Fun with Tilings

Today I’ve been playing with tilings to try to understand the relationship between radial symmetry and periodicity. I’ve come up with the following to show that each can exist independently of the other.

Periodic And Radially Symmetrical
Periodic And Not Radially Symmetrical
Non Periodic And Radially Symmetrical
Non Periodic And Not Radially Symmetrical

I’m still wondering, though, if a tiling can be radially symmetrical about more than one point and be non-periodic. I suspect not.1

  1. Does radial symmetry include a 2-fold rotor instead of the 6-fold rotors in some of the pictures?

What a cool set of explorations!

My phone had a bit of trouble with that reply. “Does radish symmetry include a 2-fold Toyota? … What a cool set of !” I like nearly all the combinations of these.

    1. The suggestions from the phone were supposed to be a chill set of decorations or explanations or explosions or expressions.
